How to Dress for Your Brand Photoshoot: A Guide for Women in Small Business

If you’re a woman in small business in Canberra searching for a personal branding photographer, chances are you’ve already had the thought: “What on earth am I going to wear?”

You’re not alone. After years of shooting brand photography for female founders, coaches, consultants, and creatives across Canberra, the outfit question comes up in almost every single enquiry I get. So I’ve put together this guide to take the guesswork out of it  and help you walk into your session feeling confident, camera-ready, and completely yourself.

Why Your Outfit Choice Matters More Than You Think

Your outfit does more than look good in photos it changes how you feel in front of the camera. When you’re wearing something that fits well and feels like “you,” it shows up in your posture, your expression, and the way you carry yourself. That confidence is what turns a good photo into a photo that actually sells your business.

This is the foundation of great personal branding photography: the outfit isn’t decoration, it’s part of the strategy.

1. Dress to Match Your Brand Aesthetic

Before you open your wardrobe, think about your brand personality first.

  • Bold and modern brand? Lean into strong colours, sharp lines, or statement patterns.
  • Soft and approachable brand? Choose flowy fabrics, gentle textures, and muted tones.
  • Corporate, leadership, or executive brand? Structured, tailored pieces will photograph beautifully and reinforce authority.

The goal is consistency. When your wardrobe echoes your brand visuals your website colours, your logo, your overall vibe your photos instantly feel “on brand” the moment someone lands on your page.

2. Choose Colours That Suit Your Skin, Hair, and Eyes

Colour is one of the most underrated tools in a personal branding shoot. The right shade doesn’t just look nice it makes your eyes brighter, your skin clearer, and you look genuinely radiant on camera.

Take white, for example. Almost everyone can wear white the trick is finding your white. Ivory, ecru, cream, or pure white all read differently depending on your undertone.

A simple starting guide:

  • Warm skin tones → mustard, olive, terracotta, and other earthy shades
  • Cool skin tones → sapphire, emerald, burgundy, and other jewel tones
  • Not sure? Stick with neutrals that align with your brand palette you can’t go wrong

Try monochrome. Dressing head-to-toe in a single colour is one of the easiest ways to look elegant and pulled-together without needing to be a styling expert. It’s my go-to recommendation for clients who feel unsure about putting outfits together.

3. Skip the Baggy Clothes

Loose, oversized clothing can hide your shape and create shadows that read as unflattering in photos. Aim for tailored or semi-fitted pieces that highlight your silhouette while still letting you move and breathe comfortably. Polished doesn’t mean restrictive it means well-fitted.

4. Dress From Head to Toe

Even if you’re expecting mostly headshots, get fully dressed shoes included. Branding sessions often capture candid, full-length, or in-motion shots you weren’t planning on, and you’ll want to feel just as put-together from the waist down. Finish the look with accessories and shoes that complement (not compete with) your outfit.

5. Prep Your Outfit the Night Before

Wrinkled clothing is one of the most distracting (and most avoidable) issues in photos. Steam or iron everything the evening before your shoot, and pack it carefully if you’re travelling to a location. A little prep goes a long way toward a stress-free shoot day.

6. What’s Trending Right Now in Canberra Branding Photography

I’m seeing a real shift away from the classic corporate blazer-and-pants combo toward outfits with more personality.

  • Jumpsuits and playsuits are having a major moment women in their 30s through their 50s are wearing them with coloured Converse or sneakers for a fun, approachable look, or heels for something more elevated.
  • Coloured blazers are still a strong, polished choice across every age group and remain a personal branding staple for good reason. You can dress it down with jeans for a more casual, everyday feel, or if you’re serving the corporate space, a traditional blazer and trousers combination is still entirely appropriate.

Bonus Tip: Loop In Your Photographer

Don’t be afraid to ask for wardrobe advice before your session. As a Canberra-based branding photographer, helping you choose outfits that align with your business goals is genuinely one of my favourite parts of the process the more prepared you feel, the better your photos turn out.
